Being Palestinian in America with Lydia El-Sayegh

See this content in the original post

What is a pilgrimage and why did pro-Palestinian protestors start doing them? How do the identities of being Christian and being Palestinian intersect in activism?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, anti-racism educator, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Lydia El-Sayegh, a local Christian Palestinian activist. Lydia gives details about how her Christian religious tradition motivates her to respond to injustice, and she also shares her experiences being Palestinian in America.

Bio:

Lydia El-Sayegh was born and raised in Atlanta, and studied biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech. She has spent her early career working at humanitarian non-profits as well as in medical device development. As of late, she has been accelerating towards local activism and advocacy. She was driven to this path primarily due to the oppression of her family and community in Gaza, Palestine and explores what it looks like to advocate in different contexts. Finding herself in American, Christian, engineering, international development, and other spaces, Lydia has used her voice and unique experiences to shed light on connections to injustice in Palestine. She often organizes with the Atlanta Multifaith Coalition for Palestine.
