The Culture, Challenges, and Contributions of Asian Americans with Terry Park, PhD

Why is the model minority myth a tool of anti-blackness?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Terry Park PhD, the founder and CEO of Maum Consulting, LLC, an Asian American Studies-based educational consulting business offering JEDHI (justice, equity, diversity, healing, inclusion)-minded online courses, curriculum assistance, and professionalization engagements. They discuss the importance of integrating mind, body, and spirit and how those are disintegrated in the process of assimilation, which causes people to lose access to their ancestral wisdoms. Park expresses how whiteness was a door that he kept hitting but couldn’t open; he realized this when he was a kid and thus avoided everything Asian. Listen as they make the connection between racism and intergenerational trauma.

Dr. Terry Park previously served as a faculty member at seven higher education institutions, including Harvard University, Wellesley College, the University of Maryland, College Park, Miami University, and San Quentin State Prison. Included on the list, “Inspiring Activists: Trailblazers and leaders in the community and in the struggle for social justice” by former San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim, Terry has participated in several national and community-based Asian American organizations across the U.S., including a stint as Executive Director of Hyphen magazine, an award-winning national print- and web-based publication on Asian American culture, politics, and arts. Raised in San Jose, California, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Seoul, Korea, Terry's free time includes getting to know his new home of Columbus, OH, scaling gym walls and pub menus, learning to make ice cream, and enjoying walks with his spirited mixed-breed rescue puppy, Miles.
